In my studies this week I learned a new word: "Aptronym."

Do you know that word? It applies to a person whose name is amusingly appropriate to their occupation or mission. I thought of Margaret Court – the Australian tennis player. Or Prince Fielder who played first base for the Milwaukee Brewers, but my favorite is Usain Bolt - maybe the greatest sprinter who ever lived. So their name describes what they do.

I hope you're familiar with the wonderful prophecy of Isaiah 9:6 which says, "For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and HIS NAME SHALL BE CALLED..." What is he called?

Wonderful Counselor.

Mighty God.

Everlasting Father.

Prince of Peace

Of course, this prophecy looks forward to the coming of Jesus Christ, and all these names apply to him. As you read through the New Testament can you think of better Aptronyms?

Wonderful Counselor - "Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge."

Mighty God - "But of the Son he says, 'Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom.'"

Everlasting Father – "But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God."

Prince of Peace – "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let them be afraid."

Yep. All those names are appropriate. Aren't you glad?
