Two Miracles of Jesus

I’ve been thinking about two miracles of Jesus, one story inside the other.

You may know these beautiful stories the raising of the daughter of Jairus from the dead, interrupted in the middle by a woman suffering from the discharge of blood for 12 years who reaches out, touches the hem of Jesus’ garment, and is miraculously healed. I love the way these two stories intersect.

Two people. One is rich, the other poor. One is accepted and important in society, the other is an outcast. One has a family. The other is alone. But both are beyond any human help.

And both come to Jesus in faith. We actually learn a lot about faith from these two. Jairus kneels in humility and dependence. The woman reaches out to Jesus in confident hope. Kneeling reminds us – “The way up is down.“ Reaching out to Jesus - reaching out teaches us to stop trusting ourselves. We learn to take our eyes off ourselves and trust in Jesus.

Perhaps you ask yourself, “Yes, but if I do this, will He respond to me?” I think Matthew, Mark, and Luke all carry this story to us, not only to show us that Jesus triumphs over spiritual death and physical death, but also to say with crystal clarity: “Whoever you are, however great, however small, male, female, religious or religious outcast- You are welcome to come to Jesus.

So come. Kneel.

Reach out. Believe.

He makes the unclean, clean.

He makes the dead to live again.

“And without faith it is impossible to please God, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him” Hebrews 11:6
