Touched to Serve
Let’s prepare our hearts and minds for the Sunday, August 29 worship service and the sermon by reviewing the bible readings, confession, and reflection.
Bible Reading 1: Ephesians 2:8-10 (ESV)
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Confession/Creed: Heidelberg Catechism Q 123
Q. What does the Lord's Prayer mean when we say, "Your Kingdom come?"
A. “Your kingdom come” means:
Rule us by your Word and Spirit in such a way that more and more we submit to you.
Preserve your church and make it grow.
Destroy the devil’s work; destroy every force which revolts against you and every conspiracy against your holy Word.
Do this until your kingdom fully comes, when you will be all in all.
Bible Reading 2: Matthew 8:14-15 (ESV)
14 And when Jesus entered Peter's house, he saw his mother-in-law lying sick with a fever. 15 He touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she rose and began to serve him.
Reflection
“The healing of Peter’s mother-in-law is a sweet little picture of discipleship. Young or old, male or female – when Jesus touches and raises us, we rise and serve him.” – Dan Doriani
