On Board with the Great Commission
Let’s prepare our hearts and minds for the Sunday, July 25 worship service and the sermon by reviewing the bible readings, confession, and reflection.
Bible Reading 1: Genesis 12:1-3 (ESV)
The Call of Abram
12 Now the Lord said[a] to Abram, “Go from your country[b] and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you. 2 And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great so that you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you, all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
Confession: Lausanne Covenant
1. THE PURPOSE OF GOD
We affirm our belief in the one eternal God, Creator and Lord of the world, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, who governs all things according to the purpose of his will. He has been calling out from the world a people for himself, and sending his people back into the world to be his servants and his witnesses, for the extension of his kingdom, the building up of Christ’s body, and the glory of his name.
Bible Reading 2: Matthew 28:16-20 (ESV)
The Great Commission
16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17 And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in[a] the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Reflection
"The church forfeits its identity as the church when it ceases to be a missionary church. When the church tries to bottle up the Spirit within itself she acts contrary to her own, and to His nature. For it is the nature of the church ever to be enlarging her borders. And it is the nature of the Spirit to transmit His life into ever-widening circles."
