Your Faith Will Lead You To Endure

Sunday, May 22. Let’s prepare our hearts and minds for the 9:30 AM In-person, 11:00 AM In-person/Livestream Worship Service, and the sermon by reviewing the bible readings, confession, and reflection.

Bible Reading 1: Galatians 3:11-14 (ESV)

Galatians 3:11-14 (ESV) 11 Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for “The righteous shall live by faith.” 12 But the law is not of faith, rather “The one who does them shall live by them.” 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”— 14 so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith.

Confession/Creed: Heidelberg Catechism Q. 1

Heidelberg Catechism Q. 1 Q. What is your only comfort in life and in death? A. That I am not my own, but belong— body and soul, in life and in death— to my faithful Savior Jesus Christ. He has fully paid for all my sins with his precious blood, and has set me free from the tyranny of the devil. He also watches over me in such a way that not a hair can fall from my head without the will of my Father in heaven: in fact, all things must work together for my salvation. Because I belong to him, Christ, by his Holy Spirit, assures me of eternal life and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for him.

Sermon Texts: Hebrews 10:35-39 (ESV)

35. Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. 36 For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised. 37 For, “Yet a little while, and the coming one will come and will not delay;
38 but my righteous one shall live by faith, and if he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him.” 39 But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.

Reflection

Early in our married life, my wife had a friend whose powerful faith during trials left a lasting imprint on our lives. She would say, “There are only three kinds of things that can happen to a Christian, and all three of them are good. First, you can be blessed, and that of course is good. Second, you can die, and that takes you into the presence of Jesus. That is very good. Third, you can suffer, and the Lord uses that to make you more like Jesus, and that too is a very good thing.” This is precisely how faith in Christ reasons, and it was this attitude that had empowered the Hebrew congregation in its prior success. - Richard Phillips
