Pay Attention, Lest You Drift Away
Let’s prepare our hearts and minds for the Sunday, September 26 worship service and sermon (In-Person 9:30 AM & In-person/Livestream at 11:00 AM) by reviewing the bible readings, confession, and reflection. See you Sunday!
Bible Reading 1: John 8:30-32 (ESV)
As he was saying these things, many believed in him. 31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
Confession/Creed: Heidelberg Catechism Q. 1
Question 1. What is thy only comfort in life and in death?
That I, with body and soul, both in life and in death, am not my own, but belong to my faithful Savior Jesus Christ, who with His precious blood has fully satisfied for all my sins, and redeemed me from all the power of the devil; and so preserves me, that without the will of my Father in heaven not a hair can fall from my head; yea, that all things must work together for my salvation. Wherefore, by His Holy Spirit, He also assures me of eternal life, and makes me heartily willing and ready henceforth to live unto Him.
Bible Reading 2: Hebrews 2:1-4 (ESV)
Warning Against Neglecting Salvation
2 Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. 2 For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, 3 how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard, 4 while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.
Reflection
The Christian life takes tremendous perseverance, but Haitian Christians know about that. A little more than a week after the 2010 earthquake, I stood in a makeshift clinic in a church near Port-au-Prince during a Sunday morning service. Blood still stained the concrete floor. I watched men and women who had undergone hasty amputations of legs and arms just days earlier raise partial limbs in praise during worship. - Jamie Dean
